Introduction to Randall Law, Author of 'Creative Schizophrenia'
I’m Randall Law, the co-author of the blog, Creative Schizophrenia. I’m an often clueless father of three, a work in progress husband to one, a rabid sports fanatic and an unemployed physician assistant learning to live with schizophrenia while renovating a farmhouse built in 1910.
Randall Law Has a History of Psychosis, Anxiety and Depression
I’ve struggled with mental illness since I was sexually abused at age nine. This traumatic experience commenced a journey down a path of debilitating anxiety and depression that terminated in psychosis. Environmental factors gave way to genetic factors, and my mental illness morphed. I first heard voices when I was in high school. My first visit to the psychiatric unit came two years later after I nearly took my own life. The psychiatrist told me I was paranoid. I told him I wasn’t. I didn’t tell him about the voices I heard; I didn’t understand them. I left the hospital and dumped my medications; I told no one. My schizophrenia was a secret.
After 7 years, I Sought Help
I endured seven years without medication. They weren’t stable years, but I persevered. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in biology and a graduate degree in physician assisting, I thought the worst was behind me; I had achieved the stability I so desperately craved. My stability crumbled the day I began practicing medicine. Two months later, car keys in hand, I planned to drive to the airport so I could commandeer an airplane to fly to a deserted island. Instead, I approached my supervising physician and simply pleaded, “I need help.”
Randall Law's Goal for 'Creative Schizophrenia'
I became a physician assistant because I enjoy helping others. I am not capable of practicing medicine right now because of my schizophrenia, but I hope to help others through my writing. I hope my words make you laugh. I hope they make you cry. I hope they help you to appreciate your life more fully. I hope they do the same for me. If you read my writing, I hope it makes a difference. I hope it helps you feel alive. I want to feel alive.

Thank you for sharing your story and being so vulnerable. I hope this breaks the stigma of mental illness! Good luck!!
Nicohle,
Thank you very much for reading and for your comment. I hope this helps break the stigma of mental illness too. It is certainly an uphill battle, but it is a battle worth fighting. Best wishes to you.
I really hope this blog makes a difference! I am currently studying psychology and have learned a lot about mental illnesses like schizophrenia, and it’s so sad how little most people know about it! I have a friend whose granddaughter has schizophrenia and her family doesn’t know how to handle it at all because they don’t understand it. I think it must be so hard for her, thanks for creating this blog, I hope it raises awareness!
Thank you very much for reading and for your kind comments Amanda. I hope this blog makes a difference as well! That's great that you are studying psychology. It is a very interesting and critical field of study. I am sorry to hear about your friend's granddaughter. Mental illness can be very difficult for both the affected individual and their family members. That is only compounded when there is a lack of knowledge about the illness and how to respond to it. If they are in need of any support, feel free to direct them to HealthyPlace as it is an excellent resource. All the best to you.
Gah! I cannot believe I’m lucky enough to call you my friend! It may not be easy, but I feel this is a good thing and the best is yet to come!
Haha thank you Rachel. We are both well aware of the fact that it isn't easy. I do hope that the best is yet to come though. I know the best is yet to come for you too!
I think you are so brave for sharing your experiences. I am sure it can be so hard to be so vulnerable and open, but I admire you for it. I think mental illness is something that isn't talked about enough. Thank you for sharing this and showing those who may struggle with the same thing or something similar that they aren't alone and that it is ok to ask for help. Our world today definitely needs people like you, so thank you. We are rooting for you.
Thank you Kathryn! It is difficult to be open about it, but it was also difficult to keep it a secret. I finally realized that I wasn't benefiting anyone by keeping it a secret. I hope it helps others. On a separate note, your son is adorable! We are glad you are both doing so well. Our second child was born prematurely. We are rooting for you too!
I am sure you will help so many. And thank you! We love our son and it is truly a miracle that he is here safe.
Thank you for sharing your story Randall! I look forward to following this blog!
This is great Randall. Keep it up! We are rooting for you!
Thank you very much Becca! I hope you and yours are doing well!
