The Origin of Values: Internal Values vs. External Values

February 21, 2019 Britt Mahrer

Personal values originate from two places. When out of balance, our self-worth suffers. Learn how to evaluate your values at HealthyPlace.

How do we define our personal values? In my post last week, "What Is Self-Worth", I explored the topic of self-worth. When we are living with low self-esteem, we often struggle to find self-worth. This comes from believing we are unable to succeed at the things we value personally. But where do these values come from? How do we decide what is important to us?

Internal and External Personal Values

In this video, I explain two major sources of our personal values and what happens when we fail to maintain a healthy balance between them.

Love the video format, and I think this is such an insightful post! It's so easy for us to get confused about what our values are, and where they come from. This is naturally going to lead us to self doubt and confusion because we're not sure what we're truly identifying and aligning with. Taking a step back to first determine what our values are, AND where they're coming from, is so powerful. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Lizanne, thank you for your comment. It can be so hard to figure out what is generated from inside of us, and what is a product of an external compass. I think you nailed it when you noted that in order to figure it out, you have to take a step back. This can be really difficult to do when we are in the midst of our busy lives, but it's such a powerful thing when we can master it.
