I Track Time to Help Combat Adult ADHD Time Blindness
I don't have conclusive data, but I'm willing to bet a majority of people would like to optimize their productivity levels and manage time more efficiently. For people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), any attempt to optimize time is littered with roadblocks. That's why I started to track my time to combat adult ADHD symptoms.
These roadblocks can manifest in different ways. For me, time blindness means I often get sucked into a task instead of spending a defined period performing it. More often than not, time blindness means I have unfinished to-do lists.
In addition to causing unfinished to-do lists, time blindness stops me from seeing the bigger picture. I get so caught up in the delegation of tasks I can't zoom out to appreciate the projects I complete and the levels of consistency I've built up over the past few years. All this while dealing with a neurological disorder that makes effecting consistency quite difficult.
I Use a Program to Track Time to Ease Adult ADHD Time Blindness
In order to help me see the bigger picture, I use a program to track the time I spend on tasks. This way, time blindness, and a faulty internal processor are taken out of the equation. As long as I input everything correctly, I can see exactly how much I'm doing and when I'm doing it. Over time, I can see the cumulative effect of my efforts. With this program, I can see the bigger picture.
While technology can be a double-edged sword for people with ADHD, it can also be a boon. Sure, there are innumerable technological distractions vying for our attention, but there exist useful applications that can temper the worst symptoms of ADHD. It's simply a matter of finding them and using them properly.
Still, an application or program is only as useful as the person using it. For example, my program doesn't care whether I log in every day or never again; it's just a tool. But, with a bit of mental effort, it's possible to harness technology and use it to live a more structured life. If you suffer from time blindness thanks to adult ADHD, consider using a time-tracking tool. Not only will it stop you from spending too much time on one task, but it will also help you see the bigger picture.
Do you struggle with time blindness because of ADHD? How do you deal with it? Let me know in the comments.
