Sleep deprivation is the number one thing keeps me from bliss. But I’ve learned that I don’t have to live a sleep-deprived life. When I follow the tips listed in this blog, I’m able to not let sleep deprivation deprive me of bliss.
Fight Sleep Deprivation By Eliminating Nighttime Expectations
I tend to overload myself with work and projects. My to-do lists are always longer than what I can accomplish in one day. I’ve learned that setting a time limit on when to stop working on my to-dos vastly increases the amount of sleep I am able to get.
I used to try to cram in as much as possible after I put my daughter to bed at 8 p.m. Now I have let go of the expectation that 8 to 9 p.m. will be productive for me. Instead, I use that time to wind down and get ready for bed. Sometimes I am even lucky enough to be in bed by 8:30 p.m. Setting reasonable expectations for yourself is vital to living a blissful life.
Combat Sleep Deprivation with a Firm Bedtime
I put my daughter in her crib at 8 p.m. with the expectation that she will be asleep by 8:30 p.m.. I put myself in bed by 9 p.m. with the expectation that I will be asleep by 9:30. Since I have bipolar disorder, I know how important it is for me to get eight hours of sleep. I also know that I will be awake before 6 a.m. no matter when I fall asleep. So, a 9:30 bedtime is really important for my bliss and wellbeing. This boundary has been really helpful for me.
Figure out what bedtime works right for you and stick with it. When it comes to sleep hygiene, a routine is your most valuable ally.
Track Your Sleep to Make Sure You Aren’t Sleep Deprived to Create Bliss
Even with all my good habits and the best of intentions, there are times where I find myself gradually getting less sleep. It starts with just 15 minutes and with a few days I find myself typing away at 11 p.m. Tracking my sleep helps keep me accountable to ensure that this doesn’t happen.
You can download apps or print out charts online to help you track your sleep. These tools can help you identify any patterns that might hinder your sleep. Tracking your sleep can also help you indicate if you need to seek help for a sleep disorder.
Following these simple tips can help ensure that you get a restful night’s sleep. And sleep is key to blissful living.

Too much work and stress will definitely lead to sleepless nights. I have done those. In 2016 I have decided to work less and exercise more.
