Why Therapy Is Important for Addiction Recovery
Therapy has been one of the most effective tools I have used in addiction recovery to help heal some of my inner wounds. It has provided me a space where I have felt safe to speak my truth and unpack any trauma, drama, guilt, and shame that has been stuck inside of me. Therapy helped me change my relationship with alcohol and guided me to build a more loving and compassionate relationship with myself.
Addiction essentially pulls you away from your true self. It turns you into a person you may not recognize, doing things you would never normally do. Then the shame gets built up so high that it may feel impossible to break down. Therapy helped me break down those walls of unhappiness, unworthiness, and a deep sense of shame while also putting the bottle down.
Addiction Recovery Therapy Changed My Relationship with Alcohol
I knew from a young age that I could benefit from therapy, but it wasn't until I was 23 that I sat in front of a licensed professional stranger for the first time. I felt nervous, weak, and terrified of being vulnerable with someone I had only just met. I expected her to point to my binge drinking habits and place all of the blame on me for choosing those destructive behaviors. To my surprise, she never did that.
Instead, she got to know me. She asked about my childhood, my relationship with my family, and how I felt about myself during my high school and college years. She asked about my dreams, goals, and ambitions and helped me see my core values in life.
We both knew alcohol was playing a negative role in my life, but she helped me understand why I had found such comfort in alcohol. As I became more self-aware, sobriety became easier. Through therapy, my relationship with alcohol started to shift. She guided me towards finding my light within myself rather than in the bottle.

Therapy is an intimidating process. It is emotionally heavy and can open the doors to trauma you have buried so deep within you. But it can also help you gain more self-compassion towards the person you are and some of your past decisions. It can help you better get to know yourself and open your mind to believing that you can follow your dreams, goals, and ambitions. It can help you learn to love yourself so much that you no longer seek love in all the wrong places. Therapy brought me out of a dark place where I used alcohol to cope with life and I know it is time for me to schedule another appointment.
